Industrious 15 Minutes of Fame: Meet Derek!
1) What (who) brought you to Industrious?
I started at Industrious in 5th grade. My dad was introduced to CrossFit a few years earlier and had just recently started. After going to watch a few classes I knew I wanted to try it. I did my first CrossFit Kids class a few weeks later… a fun little 7min AMRAP of manmakers (big thanks to Molly for that one) and I was hooked on it! I have loved the sport ever since!
2) What is the most significant change you have experienced since you have been here?
The biggest change I have seen throughout the years is my mental attitude. I have gained a lot of confidence and a lot of maturity through the gym. Even when I was a 12yr old running around trying to hang with the big dogs I was always treated as a friend instead of a kid by coaches and members alike! That has had a large impact on my life outside the gym and has made me who I am today.
3) What is your favorite thing about Industrious?
My favorite thing about Industrious has to be the coaches! These guys and girls have become some of my biggest role models. Every coach has been like a big brother or sister to me. I can’t imagine my life without these people!!
4) What are your goals or aspirations for this year?
My goal for this year is the Games!! It has been my dream to be a CrossFit Games athlete for as long as I can remember. The last three years I have always had an injury or mental setback that have kept me out of competing in the open. This year it’s going to be pedal to the metal all the way to the Games!
5) Share one thing we do NOT know about you!
Something that most people don’t know about me is that I have struggled with severe anxiety through the last 4 years. At my worst I missed about a semester of school and was hospitalized for a week, I wouldn’t have been able to make it through those hard times without all of the support from the people at the gym!
