1) What (who) brought you to Industrious?
About three years ago I realized after a lifetime of playing soccer and gradually letting myself get out of shape my knees had had enough. I was thinking about getting a road bike and starting to ride again or trying CrossFit. A friend who worked out at CrossFit Interbay offered to ask the owners for a referral in the north end. They had heard great things about Stephen and Molly and Industrious. A few days later I walked into a 6am class and that was it. I never bought the bike.
2) What is the most significant change – whether social, physical, mental…you have experienced since you have been here?
Everything has changed for the positive. I feel great all the time, even when I’m piled up on the floor of the gym and can’t breathe or feel my legs. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and my work rate and capacity continue to increase. I sleep great and feel switched on throughout the day. Hiking, skiing, fishing, hunting and just about every other activity has been enhanced by what I do in the gym.
3) What is your favorite thing about Industrious?
Besides a 36 minute AMRAP? (Just kidding, Molly!) Everybody cares. The coaches genuinely want you to become your best self. The athletes, every one of them, push you to do more than you think you can and the culture facilitates continuous growth. It’s remarkable to regularly watch people do things they didn’t know they could do.
4) What are your goals or aspirations for this year?
Beat Minh Vo Sum in any kind of OCR event! I might have to sign up for one in another state and not tell her about it to accomplish this goal but I’m willing to play that card if I have to. Beyond that I’m going to stick my first muscle up and a 5-step handstand walk this year. Other goals include harvesting my first elk with a bow, teaching my daughter to cast a fly rod and catching more steelhead on the swing.
5) Share one thing we do not know about you.
I love to cook but am a terrible baker. Not a color-inside-the-lines kind of guy I guess. Breakfast is my favorite meal to cook and I make a dang good waffle. They’re actually the best waffles ever so don’t even think your waffles are better than mine.
