INDUSTRIOUS 15 MINUTES OF FAME: MEET ALAINE!
Who/What brought you to Industrious?
I moved to Seattle in the fall of 2015. I had just started CrossFit a few months before moving, but I was hooked. One of my top priorities when I moved was finding a good gym as soon as possible. I tried several different places, but it never quite felt right. I walked through the doors of Industrious shortly before the noon class, and was greeted by Molly. I remember feeling incredibly welcome. I joined the noon class that day, and within minutes, I knew I was in the right place. It felt like home.
What is the most significant change you have experienced since you have been here?
I developed anorexia and body dysmorphia as a teen. I hated every part of my body. My legs were too big, my arms were never small enough, and I loathed my butt. I wanted to be small. I think I wanted to disappear because everything felt so hard. I punished myself by eating less every day. At my lowest point, I had days where I didn’t eat at all. My body didn’t deserve food until it looked like I wanted it to, and it never looked like I wanted it to. I was so tired all the time. Some days I would cry because I was utterly exhausted. My hair fell out in handfuls, my nails peeled, I was covered in bruises, and I stopped having a period. I felt defeated. That’s when a friend of mine introduced me to CrossFit. I went to one class and fell completely in love, but she made me realize I had to eat to perform. Very slowly, I let food come back into my life. I started eating meat again, and I was in the gym every day. Suddenly I was in awe of what my body was capable of doing! My thick thighs made me good at squatting. My butt made me good at deadlifting, and my tiny arms started to build biceps. I remember looking in the mirror at my body and being amazed. Now, I love eating, because it fuels my body to do what I love. CrossFit saved my life.
What is your favorite thing about Industrious?
Industrious feels like family. When I hit the gym for a workout or lifting session, I get to spend time with people who care about me. If I’m having a rough day, I always feel better after I’ve spent time at Industrious.
What are your goals or aspirations for this year?
I would love to get a good snatch PR and a ring muscle-up in 2018!
