Industrious 15 Minutes of Fame COUPLES EDITION: Meet Josh and Laura!!
1) What (who) brought you to Industrious?
Laura: Dr. Ryan DeBell was telling me about his awesome CrossFit gym, but I was somewhat fearful of the sport after recovering from surgery. Finally, I got the courage to check it out and as I was walking in to Industrious for the first time I ran into my college teammate and now physical therapist, Brandon Bailey, who gave the place a ringing endorsement. That evening, Piper and Aleah patiently coached me through my first class.…. And I was hooked! Josh and I came back a couple days later and now they are stuck with us 🙂
Josh: Laura and I had been interested in trying CrossFit for a while but we never ended up trying it until last February. We both love to be challenged athletically but we felt sort of stagnant in what we were doing at that time. I was playing basketball a few times a week but it was starting to get pretty rough on my body. My knees and back were always hurting and I was looking for something else to do to stay active. Laura brought me to Industrious after she had tried it once or twice and the rest is history!
2) What is the most significant change-whether social, physical, mental…you have experienced since you have been here?
Laura: I have become a much more complete and balanced athlete since working out at the gym. My background is in distance running and spent many years frustrated with not having the “right body type” for that sport at the higher levels. What I love about CrossFit is that any body type and anyone at any size can be successful! I am also super proud of what my body can do now as I never thought I would get in as good of shape after having two kids.
Josh: I feel like everything has changed for me. It’s very cliché to say but I’m in my mid-thirties and I’m in better shape than I’ve been in a very long time. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been, I feel more confident, and I can do things, athletically, that I never thought I’d be able to do. I tell people all the time that CrossFit has been one of the best things I’ve ever done!
3) What is your favorite thing about Industrious?
Laura: The people ROCK! We have made so many friends bonding and sweating with these fabulous athletes and coaches. Being a working parent can be crazy and exhausting but for the hours we are at the gym all the stress seems to disappear. I also enjoy the variety of the training and the challenges each workout presents. I am also very competitive so it is satisfying to push through hard workouts and chase your buddies!
Josh: The community! The people at Industrious are incredible! I love walking in the door and often seeing Jeremy at the front desk ready to high five us and our kids on the way in, then making our way through the gym and getting fist bumps from new friends that we’ve made over the past year, then talking with the coaches about what today’s workout is going to be like. The gym itself is great, the equipment is great, the programming is awesome, but it’s really the people that make Industrious feel like home to me.
4) What are your goals or aspirations for this year?
Laura: I have a long list of goals on my fridge and I am almost too competitive for my own good sometimes. I hope to get better at gymnastics and more of the technical lifts. I will enter the Master’s level on my next birthday, so who knows what that will bring…!
Josh: Just keep improving. There are a few of the more technical movements that are still really difficult for me. I struggle with snatch and overhead squats and I’m really focused on improving those in 2017. I’d love to get a ring muscle-up and a handstand push-up in 2017 too!
5) Share one thing we do NOT know about you!
Laura: I can sing just about any Disney song you ask me to 🙂
Josh: Some of you already know this but I’m terrified of heights. Like REALLY terrified. After some great pointers from Tia, I can finally do rope climbs without freaking out too bad but if you watch closely enough you’ll see me give myself pep talks at the bottom of the rope!
