Industrious 15 Minutes of Fame: Meet Phil D!
1) What (who) brought you to Industrious?
I had been running a lot of 1/2 marathons and relay races and was really getting burnt out on running. A college buddy of mine was big into CrossFit and suggested I try it. I had lifted weights in high school and college for football, but hadn’t trained seriously in many years. I knew I would love that weight lifting part, but was a little apprehensive about some of the gymnastics work. Pull-ups have been & continue to be a struggle for me so I wasn’t looking forward to them at all! I was really like the classes and finished the on-ramp course, but was instantly hooked when I did my first real class. It was the hero workout Hotshots 19 (6 rounds for time: 30 squats, 19 135lb power cleans, 7 strict pull-ups & 400m run). It totally wrecked me, but I loved it!!
2) What is the most significant change-whether social, physical, mental…you have experienced since you have been here?
I’d say my increase in strength and overall level of fitness. My weight tends to fluctuate, but my strength has definitely improved since I walked in the door. Fair to say I am stronger now that I was when I was in college and have far better form when lifting.
3) What is your favorite thing about Industrious?
Hands down my favorite part of Industrious is the coaches and athletes that go there. I have said over and over I stumbled onto a gold mine finding this gym so close to home. Molly and Steve-O have create so amazing here. It is not just a gym, but a second home for Katrina and I. It is amazing the kind of bond you can develop with others after repeatedly pushing yourself physically and mentally through a brutal workout. It’s painful & daunting at times, but you just power through helping each other along the way. The friendships and camaraderie I have developed with coaches and other athletes has honestly been the biggest surprise out of joining Industrious. It is something I never thought I would find again after I stopped playing football.
4) What are your goals or aspirations for this year?
By the end of the year I’d like to figure out ring muscle ups. I also want to get bar muscle ups back consistently.
5) Share one thing we do not know about you
My first job out of college was as a Private Investigator. I once spent an entire day sitting in a bar, slowly drinking a beer, and playing pool with a co-worker as we got film on our subject.
